In a matter of a few weeks, two people disappear in the wilderness of the Colorado Rockies under circumstances so mysterious and potentially frightening that the forest manager, Juan Zamora, dare not disclose what he knows, not even to his wife. He has reason to believe the missing people might still be alive but living under circumstances he couldn’t even imagine. Were they taken, and if so, why? He seeks council with a select few, including a wizened Navajo man on the reservation in New Mexico who he believes might understand his dilemma. The trail leads them to something even more mysterious; the disappearances may have something to do with the human destruction of nature. Eventually, Juan’s thoughts turn to an even bigger problem; if someday these two people did return, how could they be reintroduced to society, given where they may have been and what they might know.

This is a fantastic book with a great story and several important messages about who we are and where we are going. I found the facts regarding the environment, the native American culture, and how the government operates to be spot on and nicely woven into the book. Gary uses his substantial experience in environmental management and ecology (more than 40 years) to weave a series of important concepts and insights into the story. His descriptions of the environment, the landscape, and its elements are so realistic that it puts you right in the story with Jack and Korra. He used simple yet powerful examples to communicate the issues of climate change and global warming, including some of the areas where we don't have enough information. And he did a great job of making difficult-to-grasp science concepts like positive and negative feedback loops understandable to the regular person. The really great example is the Atlantic pump that keeps Europe's climate relatively moderate. Related to this, Gary does an exceptional job of bringing in the concept of Gaia ... through the discussions between Korra and Jack. That Gaia, our mother earth, is a whole entity unto itself. From a scientific perspective this is why it is hard for us to model how the earth will respond in the future to threats like global warming. In a scientific experiment you need to have more than one sample, but we have only one earth. Statisticians would say we have no degrees of freedom ... no variation to study the response of the earth to various threats because there is only one earth. Gary's messages on the concept of Gaia are very important. Another important insight is that threats to the environment are chronic and cumulative. It's like smoking ... one cigarette won't kill you but the several thousands that are smoked over the years will. The discussion on Korra and Jack's health and the natural food they consumed was spot on with what we are learning about our diet ... it's best to eat between 50 and 75% of raw natural foods as opposed to the processed stuff (see for example the recent book of Joel Fuhrman). And of course that too (like climate change) is vigorously fought off by those who stand to lose the most ... the big food companies. Finally, the book does a great job of presenting what we know about bigfoot. Even today it is possible to make the discovery of a species (or species) that is right under our nose. For example, 4 species of legless lizards were recently discovered in California ...[...] So who's to say that bigfoot isn't out there! I could go on and on about the many important messages in this book but I'll leave that up to the reader to discover!

Of Ravens and Contrails The Myth and Reality of the Human Conquest of Nature edition by Gary A McVicker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Congratulations to Gary McVicker on an outstanding novel. This novel deals with the current and future social and physical ecology of climate change in a manner that is exciting and understandable. Korra and Jack the main characters find a common confluence from their separate journeys and what they discover is for each reader to uncover. McVicker threads into the story people from agencies, news media, and Navajo story tellers that share compassion for the events that over take the two adventurers. A must read for the scientist to the followers of Tony Hillerman to those who believe that story telling is a vehicle for finding common harmony. We may have another Hillerman type author on our hands with a Carl Sagan passion for facts in addressing scientific significance in a real world experience.
The subject matter was dear to my heart, the writing was clear and concise, the story line held my attention. I would recommend this book to all my friends! The editing could have been better.
Well done, we all need to read this story and be reminded of our love and responsibility to our Mother Earth. May this publication inspire thought and action to change our attitude towards our responsibility to Planet Earth and the future of ALL of Her amazing diversity. It is up to each of us!
Suspenseful and thought provoking. A real page-turner all the way through. Loved it!!! The afterword needs to be read by everyone who cares about our earth.
I enjoyed this book; engaging story line and interesting cast of characters (indeed!) through which the author challenges our sense of reality concerning nature, and explores the forces behind our broken relationship with it. All in all, an interesting and enjoyable read with a creative approach to searching for deeper answers. Well informed and informing. I found the afterword especially powerful. I recommend it.
This is an incredible story on so many levels. It's a survival story clearly written by someone who has spent a lot of time in the wilderness. It's a story full of deep insights into the rich Native American, Hispanic and Anglo cultures in the Four Corners where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Navajo, Ute and Puebloans converge. It's a story about how institutions and the media respond to the unenexpected. It's a story about strong and adaptable women. But most of all it's a story about the state of the relationship between humans and the natural world that sustains us.

For all of it's historic, cultural and philosophical insight, this is a rip roaring adventure, written from a lifetime of direct experience and deep reflection. The ending takes all kinds of unexpected twists, including a very unique romantic outcome. I highly recommend Of Ravens and Contrails by Gary McVicker to all, and so does my wife!
