The Hour By Hour Drama Of A Tragic Defeat Our Navy Wouldn't Admit.

The Battle Of Savo Stan E Smith 9781258496913 Books

My Dad was in this battle-he got a purple heart. I've read about what happened and my Dads told me but according to him this book tells it the way it was and he wanted his own copy. The book was delivered ahead of schedule and was in decent shape. I was glad I could get this out of print book for him.

concise, seemingly accurate account of the worst blue water defeat in U.S.Navy history.Conveys the confusion and lack of "Battle awareness" on the part of allied Commanders, and the mastery of night fighting by the jaoanese,Recomend for any student of naval history
This is a concise, gripping, look at the Battle of Savo Island in World War II. In August of 1942, the U.S. Marines landed on Guadalcanal as the U.S. turned to the offensive in the Pacific. Yet on this night a Japanese task force of seven cruisers and one destroyer made a daring, highly-successful night attack. As the author shows, the Japanese emplyed daring, surprise, plus excellent torpedoes and night-fighting tactics. The Allies were caught napping, partly from arrogance, while also suffering from bad command structure, a lack of torpedoes, and poor communications - the approaching Japanese task force had been spotted several times before sunset yet the message never connected. The result was four cruisers sunk (three U.S. and one Autralian) and one damaged, while the Japanese attackers lost no ships and suffered only slight damage. Had the Japanese then attacked the American transports unloading off of Guadalcanal, the disaster might have been worse. The author gives readers the feel of this tragic battle, fought in confusion and near blindness by the Allies (mostly U.S.) Navy. We also learn about the aftermath, which included a board of inquiry. Yet this proved to be one of the last victories the Imperial Japanese navy enjoyed in that conflict. The story is worth reading for history buffs, and as a reminder to those with feelings of arrogance and invincability.
