Having first read Swainston's Castle Omnibus, I was excited to find there was a prequel book featuring one of Jant's previous adventures. As of now I have finally finished Above the Snowline and I am all giddy. I should have been sleeping but I couldn't. The reoccuring rift between Jant and Dellin was so catching that I wouldn't put it down.Better still, if you have read Swainston's previous books, you'll notice that she made references to this story before it was even published, so it was fun to see those references come full circle.
While reading it, I noticed that each chapter seemed very well placed in the mindset of the character narrating, and felt more acquainted with them all when I was done. It became easy to recognize Jant's self-centered contemplation, Saker's knack for detailing everything, and Ouzel's warm, hearty ability to take things in honestly while really understanding them -and they were all a good way to give the story variety.
To be honest i think i love it every time Saker makes an internal comment about Jant's nature. Sometimes he REALLY nails it, and I laugh a bit because I often feel the same way about the wayward protagonist.
